TOMBS OF THE KINGS
TOMBS OF THE KINGS
TOMBS OF THE KINGS
It is a large Hellenistic necropolis, or underground city, dating from the 4th century BC. These stone tombs are an amazing sight that has captivated archaeologists and historians for centuries, and tourists should not miss seeing them during their visit to Cyprus. Although it is called a royal tomb, it contains the remains of ancient aristocrats rather than kings. It got its name precisely because of its size and luxury.
Some of the tombs imitate the houses of the living. Atriums, Doric pillars, and magnificent frescoes dominate the large tombs accessible to tourists. Visitors can walk through the underground tombs and see the necropolis's impressive architecture.
Archaeologists and historians believe that in the past, these tombs were full of valuable items that were buried for the afterlife; however, there aren't many of them left today. Archaeological excavations are still being conducted, so new artefacts are often discovered.
Allow two hours to tour this magnificent necropolis and see at least the main, largest tombs. The cost of a ticket is 2.50 euros per person and parking is available near the necropolis. Visit this one-of-a-kind historical landmark and create unforgettable memories!
